How Donated Computers Are Closing the Digital Divide

In today’s digital world, access to technology is no longer a luxury – it’s essential. From completing homework and participating in virtual classrooms to developing the digital skills needed for future careers, students rely on technology to succeed. Yet, for many children attending Title I schools across South Carolina, access to a reliable computer at home remains out of reach.

Through a powerful partnership between Palmetto Goodwill and the South Carolina Digital Resource Alliance (SCDRA), formerly the Lowcountry Digital Equity Coalition (LDEC), donated computers are being transformed into tools of opportunity – helping students overcome barriers, close learning gaps, and build brighter futures.

By closing digital divide SC through community partnerships, we ensure that every student has the tools to succeed in a modern world.

Turning Donations into Opportunity

Every donated computer tells a story.

When community members choose to donate an unused or outdated device instead of sending it to a landfill, they are doing more than protecting the environment – they’re helping a student gain access to education, connection, and possibility. As the backbone agency for the SCDRA, Palmetto Goodwill ensures that each donated device is securely wiped, professionally refurbished, and responsibly repurposed for student use.

As part of the Computer Laptop Donation Project, these refurbished computers are then distributed to Title I schools, supporting students who would otherwise lack access to an electronic device outside the classroom. For many families, this access makes the difference between falling behind and staying engaged in learning.

Addressing Digital Equity in Our Communities

The digital divide doesn’t just affect academic performance – it impacts long‑term opportunity. Students without reliable technology face challenges completing assignments, researching projects, participating in virtual learning, and developing essential digital literacy skills.

That’s where the SCDRA plays a critical role.

Originally founded in 2022 as a regional collaboration, the South Carolina Digital Resource Alliance has since expanded statewide, bringing together partners from education, government, healthcare, philanthropy, and the private sector to tackle digital equity head‑on. By aligning strategies and scaling proven solutions, the Alliance works to ensure all South Carolinians – especially students – have access to affordable broadband, devices, and digital skills training.

The refurbished computer program is one of the most tangible ways this mission comes to life.

Donated technology provides the tools needed for local students to build essential digital skills and close the digital divide in South Carolina (empowering the next generation of our workforce).

Sustainability Meets Student Success

This initiative is also deeply rooted in sustainability.

Electronic waste is one of the fastest‑growing waste streams in the country. By capturing donated devices before they reach landfills, Palmetto Goodwill helps extend the life of valuable materials while supporting a circular economy. In 2025 alone, the organization recycled more than 401,000 pounds of electronics and diverted 36.5 million pounds of goods from local landfills.

Through Earth Month and year‑round electronics recycling efforts, Palmetto Goodwill makes it easy for residents to give back in a way that benefits both the planet and the next generation.  As one donated device becomes another student’s pathway to learning, sustainability and social impact intersect in meaningful ways.

Creating Measurable, Local Impact

The impact of this partnership is felt across classrooms, households, and communities throughout South Carolina.

  • Students gain reliable access to technology needed for schoolwork
  • Families experience reduced financial strain
  • Schools are better equipped to support digital learning
  • Communities move closer to digital equity

Each refurbished computer represents more than hardware – it represents access to education, confidence in learning, and preparation for the workforce of tomorrow.
